Bird Feeder

Kent's fun summer project has been building a "little" bird feeder for our fine feathered friends.
We haven't had our bird feeders up for a couple of years and we thought we would have more visitors to a bird feeder if it were surrounded by protected habitat instead of against the house.

Kent set up a scaffolding with planks resting on ladders and the fence in order to have easy access to the construction. You can see this is in the southwest corner of the Japanese Garden, just across the fence from the Mediterranean Garden.

This is earlier today when he was putting the tile on the roof.

He spent many hours over 4 days (not successive) building this project.

Tonight we have this completed "bird feeder/restaurant". Come on over and visit with us and see if you can spot any new birds while sipping lemonade on the deck.

Japanese Garden

This is the view of the waterfall in the Japanese Garden. Notice the beautiful Japanese iris that are part of the pond.

These Siberian iris are on the side of the pond. You can also see the bamboo pole that drips into the rock below.

Rose Garden

This is a bigger view of the rose garden. You can see the fountain running. The dramatic part of this garden right now is the bloom of "John Davis" roses over the white arbor. It is stunning!

Notice the lavendar clematis and the blue geraniums that are growing up amidst the roses. They are a wonderful contrast.

The fountain makes a wonderful water sound. It splashes all around on the roses in the circle. Some of these roses are also very fragrant.

Many of the roses in the circle are in glorious bloom. It's the prettiest time of the year for our yard.

Mediterranean Garden

Here's a view of our Mediterranean Garden. The roses are in bloom all around it. We have a firepit that is gas and we love to sit out here and roast marshmallows.

The roses out here are just gorgeous. It is also very fragrant at this garden.

Iris along the sidewalk

This is the walk along the north side of the house to the backyard. The irises were beautiful, the snow in summer along the path was fun.

These are faded now, but they were beautiful for about 3 weeks.

Front Yard

This is what the front yard looks like now. The gate leading to the rose garden has a beautiful rose "Darlow's Enigma" growing over the brick pillar.

These are the front barrels. We have yellow and purple flowers this summer and they have been very pretty.

Here's the front barrels. The green plants growing up randomly are snapdragons that have seeded. In a few weeks they will have pretty blossoms as well.

Springtime in Colorado!

Lindsey was here last weekend. We took this picture on Mothers Day in the Japanese Garden.

Then on Wednesday it snowed and we woke up with it looking like this. It was the same again on Thursday.

And then by today (Sunday again) it was back to spring. It's springtime in Colorado and you learn to expect anything.

We have been planting flowers (in preparation for Kamarie Lindahl's wedding reception here on May 29th). Fortunately, they all survived the snow and two nights below freezing. Even the lilacs survived. We'll keep you posted with the gardens this summer.

Melanie's Teeth

Who is this gorgeous woman with Kent? It's his sister, Melanie Reynolds. She is in Denver for a few days for him to work on her teeth. He learned a new procedure in January at the Dental Convention that he thought would be great for her.

Kent put composite on her teeth to make them 4 mm longer! This is after he has done the front teeth.

You can see the difference when he had just done the first two teeth.

They worked on her for around 9 hours on Thursday. They will work another 4 hours tomorrow to make sure that they add the length to all her back teeth as well.

This is Melanie's smile before they started. Now when she smiles she shows TEETH!

It's been very fun to watch how excited she has been, and how much Kent has grinned and is so excited as well. What a wonderful time this has been.

Now Melanie just has to learn how to talk again. It's quite different. So Kent has told her to practice talking all the time. So give her a call and let her practice!

New Office

We have now started in our new office. Things are going well. Many of Kent's former patients have found where we are and they are excited to have him working on them again.
This is our reception room. We are an independent building in the Highlands Ranch Town Center. The other part of our building is a chiropractor. We are on the main level and we have lots of windows. We have a big sign that says "Family Dentistry" over the door. Every day we have people walk in and ask questions and decide to come.

Linda Williams is the hygienist that has been with Kent for over 23 years. She is in the new sterilization lab. She's excited to be working with Kent again.

This is Kelly Cater--Kent's assistant for over 23 years. She was a major help in getting the new office going. You can see one of the operatories here. It is much more open than the old office.

Here's a patient from today--Connie Hirz. We have known her for many years as an art teacher for our kids at Creekside and Eaglecrest. It was fun to see her again.

Rolayne is working the front desk. We are enjoying our new location and excited about this new adventure!

Cootie Party--Cowboy Theme

October brings another Cootie Party. We had lot of fun with Yipee Yi Yo Ki Cootie! Our friends really got into the spirit of things dressing up with cowboy hats, etc. We had a fun time "lassoing" steers in the basement. Here's some of the onlookers.

Lindsey and her roommate Camille were here for the party. Here's their group being "hogtied."

Kent and Rolayne during the lasso time. We used Evan Goulding's steers from his days in the rodeo circuit. It was pretty fun and funny to watch everyone.

Of course Rick Valentine made a hit coming as an Indian to the cowboy party. Jill wore her pink cowboy hat and had pink pistols. We had lots of fun as always. Our friends are very kind to put up with the silliness. But you know: High Adventure, Light Refreshment and Cheap Thrills is the theme.

In the Middle

When I went to Utah in June I took a book that Dave had made when he was 7 years 2 months old. It was to my parents. He had drawn around his foot to show them how big his foot was. So I took it to show Kobe because he was that same age now and I wondered how he would compare. His foot was exactly the same size as Dave's was at that age! Then we measured how tall Kobe was compared to me and I realized it was about the same height as I am to Dave. So we took a picture of me between them. I thought this was pretty fun. How long do you think it will be until Kobe is as tall as I am? I think I will be the shortest in my family.

We had such a fun time meeting with the family. This night Grandpa bought us all dinner.

Oregon Trip

Lindsey and Kent enjoyed looking at the "critters" in the water. The only problem is that the water off the Oregon Coast is very cold!

We went to lunch at "Mo's" so that we could have clam chowder. Rolayne, Kent, Darek, Wendy, Ryken, Lindsey and Jantsen enjoyed some hours at the coast. Salem was experience record heat while we were there, so we went to Lincoln City on the coast.

We went to Silver Creek Falls, one of Kent's favorite places. Ryken, Lindsey and Jantsen enjoyed the hike.

Dave, Shawnee, Kent, Wendy and Rolayne. We hiked a long way around the falls. It was beautiful!

Grandpa Sellers enjoyed listening to the family sit around and tell stories. We are putting his stories together in a history of his life. It was fun to spend time with him.

June Happenings

We had the sad news on June 1, 2009 that Kent's sister Wendy's husband (Steve Lakey) died that morning. He had not been feeling well for some time. He was only 50 years old. Kent and I were glad that we could go to Oregon to be with the family for the funeral. This is Wendy's family--Qile, Jantzen, Darek, Ben, Jaimason, Shaunelle, Ryken, Brynn and Wendy.

It was nice to have all the siblings there with their dad. Wendy has been amazingly strong. We think about her often. Last week we got the news that Grandpa Sellers has prostate and bone cancer. He also has been feeling poorly for some time. Hopefully the hormone therapy will help shrink the tumors and we can enjoy him for longer. You can see how much he has shrunk the last few years. He used to be the same height as Kory and Kent. When we got the call about Steve, I was in Utah to help with Nathan and Suzie's move and to help with Dave and Sarah's children.

This is Solena and Samantha. Solena will turn 4 on July 7 and Samantha turned 2 on April 16. They are adorable and fun little girls who love to play Barbies and baby dolls. That's a good way to melt my heart.

Here's Bryce and Kobe before their baseball game. They have had a lot of fun playing, and thanks to all the "Practice" with their dad and mom, they are really quite good at playing baseball. It was fun to watch a couple of their games while I was there. We also had an UNO marathon some of the days. They are really good sports and understand how to play well on their own. We spent many hours laughing and playing games.

I had fun making these little dresses for Samantha and Solena while I was there. I enjoyed playing with them. It's so fun to see their personalities.

Spring Is Here!

This is the most wonderful time of the year! The lilacs are blooming (our backyard smells heavenly), the columbines are blooming, so are the iris and the poppies. This is a couple pictures of the Japanese Garden with the creeping phlox in full bloom. It just looks beautiful!

It's also graduation time and I got to go to the graduation for my niece, Jessica Anderson. This is Jessie with her siblings--Kelly, Jessie, Spencer and Mari. It's always fun when the youngest graduates. These are Connie and Brian's kids. (Kelly is due with a girl on July 15; Mari is attending BYU-I; Spencer works 2 jobs).

Kent was trimming the upright juniper in the front yard. He just kept trimming it because the snow had really damaged the shape on it. He kept trimming and trimming, and ended up with this cool palm looking juniper! We love it. Looks like it comes from the land of Dr. Seus.

Come on over and visit our gardens. After a lot of work to clean it all up, we are ready to play and enjoy!

10th Anniversary

This is the plaque at the Columbine Memorial. It is a very touching site.

The memorial is just over the hill from Columbine High School. We were there at dust last August.

Those of us who lived here have very strong memories of that day, 10 years ago today. A lot of healing can happen with time. But there will always be lessons about how we can get along better with others. We hope this was not in vain.

Easter

We have always had an Easter tradition of coloring eggs. Just because there are no kids at home doesn't mean we stop that tradition. JoAnn and Steve Calder are now our "Easter Egg" buddies. We are getting more creative each year.

We made a lot of fun designs this year. Now we are enjoying eating eggs every day!

New Zealand

This is a waterfall by Milford Sound. It is a fjiord
on the South Island. We took a boat ride out and saw
many beautiful scenes.

This is near Champagne Lake in Rotorua. It is like Yellowstone with natural geysers, fumaroles, hot pots, etc. It smelled like sulphur. It was a nice hike all around the site.

This is the Franz Josef Glacier. It's amazing to see all the different forms of nature.

Of course we had to take time to smell the roses. We saw quite a few beautiful gardens. These were in Christchurch.

Kye took his nap most days while we continued on our activities. He was a very good sport considering all the things we were doing. This is also in Rotorua.

Samoan Adventure

Kent took some dental supplies down to Apia to a dental clinic. He got to spend half a day working there with Ralph Downey. The people come in and the first ones get the services for the day.

We went to the market. This is where Nathan got his weapon. It was very cool!

We played at some beautiful beaches. Nathan and Suzie went out snorkeling for awhile and we got to play with Kye. He loved to be thrown in the air.

This is Rolayne on sliding rock in Papaseea. I did some cliff jumping and rock sliding--my first time! It was so beautiful. We looked at all Nathan and Suzie's blog pictures and we recognized many of the places. It was so fun to be there.

Like father, like son. This is at Papaseea when Kent and Nathan climbed up some rocks after diving from the cliffs.

Rolayne made Matthew a beautiful, manly quilt for Christmas. He really thinks it's cool!

Rolayne, Kent and Lindsey made a visit to Brian and Nicole's over the Holidays. This is their very cool kitchen table. (Bar stools to come.) Note in these two pictures the new oak flooring Brian is installing. The varied grains, colors and widths of planking make for a rustic and beautiful effect. They should be proud.

Holidays

On New Years Eve we had a Pirate Cootie Party with the Allen family. It was lots of fun to have everyone join in on this "high adventure." The championship round came down to Rolayne and Paul. Yes, Rolayne was the champion (embarrasing to win at your own party.)

This is Patsy Castor--a friend that I spend a lot of time with. She made bracelets for us for Christmas. This is Dalene Settle (Patsy's former care taker) and Rolayne and Lindsey showing off our bracelets.

Brian and Nicole came over in the late morning on Christmas. It was fun to have some time with them. We also went to see their house later in the week. Brian has just put in wood floors and it looked great!

Kent enjoyed Christmas--especially because he didn't ever catch the flu bug. It made him have a few more responsibilities, but he did it cheerfully.

It was wonderful to have Lindsey home for Christmas. It was a quiet Christmas morning with just the three of us. But we enjoyed it a lot. We also spend a lot of time with extended Allen family over the next few days.

Utah trip

I had fun on a recent trip to Utah (for Lindsey's show). It was fun to have time with Dave and Sarah's family. I always like to do a project with the kids. This is Bryce and Kobe fingerpainting.

Solena was my shadow. I loved playing with her--singing, talking, playing with kitty, cleaning, organizing, etc. I went with her to her nursery class on Sunday. She was fun to play with.

I found the old books that Dave wrote when he was little. I had fun reading them to Kobe and his friend (McKay), Solena and Bryce. Then Kobe and I made books for him.

This is Lindsey with her cast while they were posing for pictures after the show. These kids love her. She is amazing with them. She has earned their respect so now she can have fun with them.

We have always given something to Lindsey after her shows that will represent the show. This is a Barbie decked out like Thoroughly Modern Millie. It was a ton of fun to see the show and watch the amazing production Lindsey was responsible for.

Office in the digital world

These are pictures of an overhead monitor and a computer and monitor as they now are in every operatory in the office. We also take digital xrays which show immediately on the monitor. We have a new digital panoramic xray machine. We can put the xray images and intraoral camera images on the overhead monitor for patients to see. Pretty cool stuff.

We went to dinner with Brian and Nicole to celebrate her birthday. It was a hibachi style restaurant and Nicole loved it. She has a new job this year. She works at an elementary with handicapped children. It is emotionally demanding, but she likes it. Check with her to find out more about it. Happy Birthday Nicole!

Colorful Fall

We have had an absolutely beautiful and colorful fall. This barberry in the front yard has never been so red.

The cotoneaster hedge in the backyard is more colorful that it has ever been. This was on Halloween.

See the red amur maple in the Japanese garden. We are loving it. We still haven't had any snow yet this year.

Cootie!

This is the poster that Brian drew for the Cootie Party. He took the materials home and drew it there. He said Matthew didn't know he could draw! He is so creative. Look at the details of these little cooties on the ship and on the land. We are so grateful that he will draw this poster for us every year!

Cap'n Kent and Rascal Rolayne were the host and hostess for this 24th Annual Cootie Invitational Tourney. We had a lot of fun dressing up and planning the activities for the night.

We had full wall decorations (thanks to Suzie for suggesting we look up Oriental Trading Catalog for pirate ideas). This is a picture of the group playing games in the basement. Kent is rolling "eyeballs" into a treasure chest. We played "pin the eyepatch on the captain". You can see the big captain on the wall in the background. We also "bowled" with skulls and shot at skulls.

These lovely ladies are some of the "wenches" that their husbands had to catch by identifying their bare feet while the rest of their bodies were hidden.

We have some fun friends that are nearly as crazy as we are. It is a fun evening for us to laugh and laugh, eat, and play and laugh some more.

Telluride Weekend

Suzie's sister got married on September 20th in Telluride, Colorado. She came from Samoa for this event. This is Suzie and Kye on the gondola ride up to the top of the mountain at Telluride. They both looked wonderful!
Here they are at the top of the mountain.
Suzie and Kye came back to Denver with Kent and I for a few days. On our drive home we stopped at the Grand Canyon of the Gunnison and looked around. It was beautiful.

This is Suzie's family (oops, Natalie isn't in this picture). It's Reagan, Suzie, Carl, Boonie, Cindy, Sid, Mimi and Jessica. See more pictures on Nathan and Suzie's blogspot. It was so fun to see all the family together.
This is the little stud muffin (minus the tie courtesy of Kent). He has grown so much. He was so much fun to play with. He "talks" a lot, climbs a lot, giggles and is lots of fun. We loved having Kye and Suzie with us for a few days.

Lions Den Updates!

Roger, Connie, Paul and I were all at the Lions Den on Thursday and Friday this last week. The updates have been completed. Now we just had to clean and organize. Thanks to Connie and Brian for their push and vision to make these beautiful improvements. You can see a few pictures here of the updated granite countertops in the kitchen and bathrooms, as well as new floors in the kitchen and master bathroom.

It really is beautiful.

Japanese Gardens finished!

The rocks have now been added to make the ponds complete. It looks beautiful. The rocks represent water, and it is much safer, less maintenance, and No Algae!
The new granite stone lantern looks beautiful overlooking the lower pond. The bridge had it's lower cement carved away.
The water now runs down into the rocks and is recycled. It looks beautiful. You should come and see it!

Dave's room

We have changed the look in Dave's bedroom. Here's the new look. I made a headboard, we painted the wall green and yellow, and we got new pictures for the walls. I also made a valence for the windows. It looks really cool!

Allen Party

Roger's family was all in Denver for his birthday. We had a picnic at Clement Park with the family. This is the next generation. It was a lot of fun to see everyone and 3 new babies we had never met.

Jackie, Paul and I looked around at the Columbine Memorial located by Clement Park. It was a very touching display and memory of the Columbine incident.

Rolayne's updates

I went to Education Week during the 3rd week of August. I got to stay with Dave and Sarah and their family. This was the last night there when I played with the kids. They each decorated their "initial" with stickers. It was fun to play with them and see how big they are getting.
We went to watch Bryce's soccer practice one night. It was fun to play with the girls. Solena is very talkative and friendly right now. She loves to sing and play. Samantha is growing and doing so many new things.

Before I went home on Saturday, I stayed and watched some of Bryce's soccer game. At this age it is still "Swarm Ball." It was very fun to watch him run. Dave is the coach for his team. Bryce scored a goal during the game.

Kobe is "Mr. Creative" (follows after his dad). This is his museum wall. He has made all kinds of creations out of paper plates, pipe cleaners, popscicle sticks, tape and whatever else he can find. He started kindergarten his last week and he loves it.

Lindsey and I went with Brandon Sellers to dinner for his birthday. It was so fun to catch up with Brandon. He is loving BYU and being independent.

This is the new granite stone lantern that Kent got for his birthday. Now he is just waiting to finish the Japanese Garden ponds to place it in one of them. We'll show you that when it is ready!
Kent tore out the old deck in front of the tea house. He has been building this new one out of trex. Our neighbor tore out his trex deck to build a much larger deck, and this is the "recycled" new deck.

You can see the new "extended" deck. Also now the hole is full of rock for the fountain to drain into. Next step is to cover all the pond with weed barrier, and then put black rock everywhere for the new pools to be complete.

Strong Sellers boys

Kent has been working very hard to make a new "bridge" over to the t-house. He first banged out the stones in the old path. We want to make the path over more safe for people to cross. He worked very hard (as usual). He puts together the puzzle to make these stones work.

Here's the completed path. It is beautiful.
This is Kent showing Jackson and Heather Westenskow what the pond looks like when we first turned it on. Jackson and Heather are living with us for a month while they are waiting to get into their new home. We've had a lot of fun with them.
Now Kent has ripped out the deck to the t-house. He will be building a new deck out of gray trex. It will stick out over the pond.
This is the new fountain. It has a much smaller pond at the top than before. The water runs over the falls and now down through one pathway into the hole. This is the hole that you have seen before with the carpet and rubber liner. The carpet was to protect the rubber liner from rubbing against the cinder blocks. The black piping now has the pump in it. It has holes all around in it so the water can get into the piping, but not the rocks. The next step is to fill rocks the rest of the way to the top of the rubber liner, then covering the whole thing with weed barrier, and then putting black round stones all around the whole old pond. The water will disappear into the rocks and recycle back up to the top. The rest of the pool is a "dry pond" that you see in many typical Japanese gardens. The only problem right now is that the pump used to pump from the lowest pond up to the top pond and need to have a lot of pressure to do it. It is almost too strong for this small fountain. The water runs very hard. Kent has also discovered a leak on the right side where the pond connects with the old deck. I'm sure he will figure out what to do. It is really beautiful. You should come and see it!

Muscle Power

Kent and Brian moved a big rock about 5 feet forward so that the rock will be at the top of the new "upper pond."

This rock is about 850 pounds. Now Kent is a very, very strong skinny guy! But it was wonderful to have Brian's very strong muscles to help!

Japanese Gardens

Here are the changes going on in the Japanese Gardens. Richard and Connor Lindahl came over and helped Kent work on Saturday for 5 hours in 98 degree heat. They are converting the water in the middle and lower ponds to be dry ponds.

After a couple of years of having challenges with the ponds in our Japanese Gardens, Kent has finally come up with a new plan. He has been knocking out the big ponds. He will make them into dry ponds. We are keeping the waterfall, but it will just drop below the path to the teahouse. This also means digging out the upper pond. Fortunately, Richard and Connor Lindahl came over last Saturday and helped do hard work for about 5 hours in 98 degree heat. These are the pictures of the lower and upper ponds as well as what the new center pond looks like in front of the teahouse.

Landscaper

Kent has been having fun helping some friends to do some landscaping at their homes. He's been helping our neighbor, Doyle Tinkey, and another friend, Bill Perry. This is a picture of Kent and Bill. Lagoon

We had fun playing at Lagoon on June 28th for the Allen Family Reunion. Dave, Sarah, Kobe, Bryce, Solena and Samantha were able to join us. We had a lot of fun riding with them that day. The kids were great. It was fun to spend some time with them. Being at a theme park is much more fun when you can have children there!

Lindsey has officially set us up to be "bloggers". We want to make sure we can keep in touch especially with Nathan and Suzie in Samoa. We'll be showing pictures from our gardens as well as from the well used camera that Rolayne always remembers to take to special events.
